Personally, I am also very much doing that too. All the reasons companies don't need us are also reasons we don't need them. Produce your own <whatever> and reach the billions of consumers that use the internet. I only need 0.008% of Steam users to buy my game and I will earn more than I did last year, in the first half of this year. I have time for two shots at this a year. According to industry news blogs, about 15% of the indie games in my selected genre make more than I did last year.
